Jan 28, 2016 | Fences

Now that blizzard Jonas has come and gone, winter weather has finally truly descended on the Maryland region. While the snow can be fun for a time, it can also wreak havoc on your wood fence. Wooden fences don’t do well with moisture and winter weather creates conditions that can quickly deteriorate the condition of your fence. With the right seasonal fence care, however, you can ensure that your wood fence looks great for years to come. Learn what you need to know, below.

Follow these steps to keep your wood fence looking its best this winter.

How to Care For Your Wood Fence in Winter

Prevent soil from shifting

When frost thaws, it can cause your fence posts to move which forces the soil below to shift. When this happens, it can damage the integrity of your fence by loosening the posts. The best way to prevent this is by ensuring that your fence posts were installed deeply enough to avoid shifting (which is why it’s so important to hire a reputable fence installer).

Avoid falling tree limbs

The weight of snow can  cause tree branches and limbs to snap, and when they land on your wood fence, it can spell disaster. For this problem, prevention is your best bet: Be sure to keep all trees near your fence well pruned and trimmed back. After a snowstorm, always brush off snow from any limbs that overhang your fence to ensure they don’t accidentally break and cause damage to your wood fence.

Prevent moisture from building up

During the winter, your fence is exposed to a much higher level of moisture than during other times of the year. In the summer, the heat dries out your soil in between rains, giving your wood fence a break from wet weather. In the wintertime, however, moisture isn’t given the chance to dry out so your fence is constantly exposed to mold and mildew. To prevent this problem, always brush away accumulated snow and debris from the base of your fence.
