Power Washing
Reveal the True Beauty of Your Deck This Summer
Is your deck starting to look dirty and weathered? After a rough winter and a rainy spring, that isn’t a major surprise. Luckily, a power washing will restore it to its former glory! Here are a few tips for power washing your deck this summer.
Which Type of Decking Material is Ideal for Power Washing?
Power washing is appropriate for both composite and wooden decks, but you’ll want to pay close attention to the pressure setting on your power washer for the best results. For softer woods like wood and pine, you should keep the pressure between 500 and 600 psi to avoid damaging the wood grain. Harder woods, however, can hold up well to pressures up to 1500 psi. If your wooden deck is painted, you should not attempt to power wash it. Even at low pressure, the chances of paint chipping will still be quite high.
If your deck was constructed using composite material, you should be sure to stay under 3100 psi. Exceeding this number could potentially damage your deck and void its warranty. If you do not feel comfortable with power washing, call a local trusted professional to power wash your deck.
Choosing a Cleaner
Before starting your power washing, you’ll have to decide which cleaner to use. You will likely be choosing between detergents, bleaches or chemicals designed for certain types of wood. Really, any of these choices will work just fine. The biggest key is to strictly adhere to the manufacturer’s instructions. If you do so, you should be pleased with the result regardless of the type of cleaner you chose!
After Power Washing Don’t Forget to Sand!
If your deck is wooden, you shouldn’t call the job done until you follow up your freshly power-washed deck with sanding. If any light splintering occurred while your deck was wet, you’ll want to get rid of it right away. The walking surface will become much smoother, and your sealant will adhere to your deck much easier once the time comes to re-seal your deck.
