Keep your Baltimore County deck looking good year-round by cleaning it at least once a year!

Does your Baltimore County deck need a good cleaning before the winter sets in? Cleaning it will not only keep it looking fresh but also help the wood maintain its integrity, increasing its longevity. Sweeping and removing debris regularly is one maintenance task to perform – it’s a pretty easy way to keep your deck looking good. However, it’s important to do a thorough cleaning once a year, as well as retreating or resealing the wood. Here’s how you can clean your Baltimore County deck.

Cleaning Preparations

Clear the surface of the deck to ensure easy access to the whole thing. Remove everything from small items and decorations to potted plants and patio furniture. You should also lightly cover any fragile plants on the ground near the deck to protect them. Next, sweep and clear the deck of large debris. Place all the debris into a garbage bag to clear out later.

Hosing or Pressure Washing

Next comes rinsing the deck down with water. If you use a hose, a spray attachment set on the most powerful setting should be used. Aim the spray directly at muddy and heavily soiled spots in order to remove as much of the dirt as possible. After cleaning the especially dirty spots, rinse the entire space, working from one end of the deck to the other until you’ve rinsed the entire area. You can also use a power washer, but take special care to use the proper technique so that you don’t damage the wood and consider using a sprayer fan.

Cleansing

Make a solution of soapy water using laundry detergent or use a specially formulated detergent. Apply it to the deck and scrub using a long handled brush with stiff bristles. Just as with your hosing, start at one end of a deck and work your way to the other end. Rinse the deck with your spray hose.

After this, go ahead and reseal or retreat your wood to protect it from the upcoming winter elements!
