The type of maintenance that your fence requires changes depending on the type of fence material that is is made from. Luckily, no matter what type of fence you have, maintenance is a pretty simple task! All it takes is a little know-how and a free afternoon and your fence will look as good as new.
Fence Cleaning Tips for Any Fence Material
Wood fence cleaning
Cleaning a good fence is perhaps the most complicated of them all, which makes it a good place to start because all of the other methods will sound like a breeze! To clean your wood fence, you’ll need to rent a power washer. First, lay down a tarp to protect your grass and landscape. Then apply a wood cleaning solution and let it soak in for a good long while, until you notice that the wood looks cleaner. Then use the power washer to rinse it thoroughly. After that, you’ll want to re-stain your fence to ensure it looks good for years to come. Your wood fence should be cleaned every 3-5 years.
Vinyl fence cleaning
Vinyl fences are incredibly easy to keep clean. All you need is a garden hose, some soapy water, and a scrub brush. Wash your fence down thoroughly every 3-6 months to keep it in tip-top shape, and rinse thoroughly with your garden hose. For stubborn debris, gently scrub it away with your brush.
Aluminum/steel fence cleaning
For aluminum, steel, and chain link fences, the method is very similar to vinyl fences. Simply use soapy water to clean your fence and then give it a good rinse with your garden hose. If you notice stuck-on dirt or grime, use your soft scrub brush to tackle the problem. Metal fences are extremely durable and low maintenance so you should only need to clean them once per year. You might even be able to get away with doing it less frequently if your fence still looks clean and new.
