Types of Backyard Patio Designs

A backyard patio can be cozy and quaint or an elaborate place to entertain.  It’s a natural extension of your home outdoors. Colorful plants, comfy furniture designs, fun lighting, and a fire pit can enhance the space.  If you are ready to tackle a patio project,  here are some popular backyard patio designs to consider.

Multi-Level Patio

This design can feature a backyard waterfall and stream. Multiple levels are perfect for a waterfall.  Top it off with rocks, a natural staircase, and low-maintenance landscaping.  A multi-level design, which can feature separate levels for eating and relaxing, is also perfect for a firepit.

Small Patios

A patio with a couple of chairs and modern landscaping will fit a smaller space.  Plant ornamental grasses for decoration.  Surround the space with stepping stones, gravel, or mulch. To ensure patio privacy, choose an area alongside your house or fence.  Install a trellis for a more secluded feel.

Large Patios

Fancy water features such as ponds and fountains can make a big, open patio stand out.  A large fire pit surrounded by lots of seating will feel good during a gathering on cool evenings.  Raise a large patio with retaining wall blocks.  A raised patio planter can add a splash of color.

Enclosed Patio

This design lets you use the space even when it’s raining.  Install a roof and screened-in windows to keep you dry.  String lights can add a festive touch.

Fire Pits

Make a fire pit the centerpiece of your outdoor patio.  Adirondack chairs with colorful pillows can surround it.  This special space is perfect for relaxing and socializing.  Jazz it up with flowering plants,  cacti or succulents.

A  Pergola

This feature will add some shade to your backyard patio.  Cover the seating area by the pool or eating space to get some relief from the sun.  A pergola also works well above an outdoor patio kitchen.

Popular Patio Materials

Backyard patios are commonly made of concrete, brick, flagstone, pavers, tile and cut stone.   Let’s take a look at how these materials can make a patio pop.

Concrete. This material is inexpensive and very versatile.  It can be dyed in several colors and made into a variety of patterns, shapes, and sizes.

Brick.  It has a classic look that goes with many landscape and architectural styles.  Brick can be used for patio floors, pathways, walls, and edging.  Popular patterns include herringbone, running bond, and jack-on-jack.

Flagstone. The large, flat slabs of stone are available in various colors and types. It often comes from local quarries. Types of flagstone include sandstone, limestone, bluestone, and quartzite.

Pavers.  Concrete pavers are no longer boring and are now available in more natural-looking colors and textures. Pavers can mimic brick, cobblestones or cut stone. Interlocking pavers fit together like puzzle pieces.

Tile.  Unglazed tiles are best for a patio surface.  It comes in porcelain, terracotta, and quarry.  Sealers and coatings will protect the tile from the outdoor elements and keep its color.

Cut Stone.  Stone tile is cut into square or rectangular shapes.  It has a more formal look than uneven flagstone.  Cut stones can be laid in rows or spaced apart. Ground cover or loose material fills the gaps.

Loose Material. Often called gravel, it consists of decomposed granite, crushed stone, or an aggregate of various stones.

Mixed Material.  A large area can be broken up with a variety of materials. They can include brick, concrete, flagstone, pea gravel, pavers, and tile.
