5 Common Forms of Deck Damage

May 19, 2016 | Decks

A deck is a great addition to any backyard. It will give you a space to gather and socialize and just enjoy sunny days and beautiful weather. Unfortunately, decks can also be prone to certain forms of deck damage. From water to insects, there are many hazards awaiting even well-kept decks. Luckily, many forms of deck damage can be prevented with a little bit of know-how. Learn what you need to know about preventing damage to your deck in this week’s blog, below.

Water damage

If you have a wood deck then the lumber was likely treated with a water-resistant coating. However, this coating will wear away over time and your deck will need to be resealed. If you’re like many Americans and you neglect to annually reseal your deck then it can quickly deteriorate and break down. To find out whether your deck needs to be resealed, pour a little bit of water on it. If the water beads up and slides away then your deck is in good shape. If it doesn’t bead and soaks into your wood then you definitely need to have your deck treated and you may need to replace wood that has been damaged.

Fading color

Over time what was once a vibrant and brightly colored deck will begin to fade. This is because the UV rays from the sun break down the color compounds in paint and stains, making your deck look old and washed out. Luckily this one is a quick and easy fix: All you’ll need to do is repaint or re-stain your deck to get it looking as good as new.

Rotting wood

If your wood deck has been exposed to water damage for an extended period of time then your wood is at risk of rotting. Rotted wood is not structurally sound and can compromise the safety of your deck, so if you expect that this is a possibility then you should have an experienced decking contractor come out to take a look and replace boards–or even your entire deck–if necessary.
